What happens at GenJ Installation or Update?

From the GenJ download page http://sourceforge.net/projects/genj/files you download either the file for an installation or for an update. According to the options of your browser this file will arrive in a folder on your computer, say 'Download'. The file is a zipped (compressed) package to reduce the size during download and contains all the files needed for installation.

Double-click on the genj_install-nn.jar activates the Java Run-Time Environment (RTE) to install GenJ. (If on your system .jar is not assigned to Java and an archive program opens instead, close this and start the installation with right-click and context menu 'open with Java'.)

The installer will ask you where to put the program files of GenJ. Best is to put them to your other program files, e. g. C:\Programs, and name it e.g. 'genjnn'. In this folder the program code of GenJ is stored.

Further the installer will ask you whether to generate an icon on your desktop and where to generate an entry in the start.

Normally the downloaded file is not needed anymore and can be deleted.

First Start

At the first start of GenJ it will generate a system folder .genj with the specific permanent information of your installation, e.g. the option settings of your GEDCOM files, the log file etc. (To see this folder you have to make system folders visible in your file manager. In windows you will find it normally under your 'documents and settings' folder.)

Your GEDCOM files

You now may create your GEDCOM files. It is strongly recommended to store your data in a completely separate folder, e.g. 'My_Genealogy'. In Windows, for easier backup, these files should even be better on another partition for user data.

GenJ Updates

If you just update your GenJ you download a genj_aaa-nn.zip. This is also a zipped (compressed) package. It arrives in your download folder. You unzip (expand) it into your Genj program code folder, e.g. 'genjnn' with the option 'overwrite existing files'.

With this folder structure you can easily understand that a re-installation or an update of the program can never corrupt your GEDCOM data nor your option settings.
