Manual

After starting GenJ a single window shows a list of all opened Gedcom-files1).

The buttons at the top of the window let you perform operations like opening or creating a new file. Also shown is a button for each view you can open to discover and work with the information contained in the currently selected Gedcom-file.

Concepts

There are three main concepts2) that are good to know when exploring GenealogyJ.

  • Gedcom is the underlying data structure (“how does this look underneath?”)
  • Tag Paths define queries on that structure (“how do I get at stuff?”)
  • Context describes what users can do within a logical context they're looking at (“what can I do here?”)
1) the first time GenJ is started an example file will be loaded automatically
2) knowledge about these concepts helps getting the most out of the views that represent the data
