Family

A family is a legal, common law, or other customary relationship of man and woman and their children, if any, or a family created by virtue of the birth of a child to its (presumed) biological father and mother.

The standard assumes that the father (HUSB) is male and mother (WIFE) is female. There can be no more than one HUSB/father and one WIFE/mother listed in each family record. If, for example, a man participated in more than one family union, then he would appear in more than one family record. The family record (FAM) contains all the information we have collected about a family:

  • Attributes (facts) like number of children
  • Events like engagement, marriage, divorce
  • Relationships based on kinship: spouses, children
  • Links to other persons like witnesses to a marriage, submitters
  • Links to other entity types like notes, multimedia objects, sources
  • Information about the data record and various ID numbers

We edit this record normally in Edit View standard mode.
But in special cases we need to switch to the GEDCOM mode as well.

Events and facts (attributes)

Relationships based on kinship

To add relationships with children we use the Context Menu on the family in focus in any view: → 'Family' → 'Add son|daughter'.

If we add a child to a person without a partner a family record is created with an unknown partner. Do we add it to a person with spouse(s) (instead to a family) the child is added to the family of the first »spouse in Family« pointer in the person's record.

The preferred order of the children pointers (CHIL) within a family structure is chronological by birth. If the children are entered in the wrong sequence we can correct it in GEDCOM mode: 'drag and drop' the entries with the left mouse key. In the same way we can → 'Family' → 'Swap spouses'. Swap spouses is not recording an indecent behavior :-) but correcting an error, if we entered the data of the spouses into the wrong record.

How do we record witnesses of marriage?

Same-sex relationships

Relationships of lesbian or gay couples can be recorded as well. For each partner the real sex should be entered.

A child of them must have marked in its record the relationship 'child in family' (FAMC) with the property 'Pedigree (PEDI)' and the adequate value 'adopted' or 'foster'. For that we need to use the GEDCOM mode.

If the child has a blood relationship to one of the partners it belongs to the family of this partner and a spouse. Its relationship to the same-sex family is additionally documented as described above.

Relationships to other entity types

To add relationships to other entity types we also use the context menu. How we add a Note, Multimedia Object, Source and Submitter see there.
