The individual record (INDI) contains all the information we have collected about a person:

We edit this record normally in editor standard mode. How to do that most efficiently is shown in Edit View.
But in special cases we need to switch to the GEDCOM mode as well.

Personal names

To change names see also Edit View – 'Name fields' and 'Changing names throughout the file'.

For the following topics see Personal name:

Relationships based on kinship

Relationships based on kinship are not captured directly through references to e.g. spouse, children or parents. Instead an indirection through a reference to a Family is used. So having a spouse means to be spouse in a family with another spouse and having parents means to be child in a family with two spouses.

A person may have no or more relationships 'Child in family': unknown parents, biological parents (normal case), adoptive or foster parents. The latter is expressed by the property 'Pedigree (PEDI)' (see Adoption).

A person can have zero or more 'spouse' relationships (FAMS): further marriages, illegitimate affairs etc. each of which is recorded in an own family (FAM). For details see Family.

To add relationships with persons like parents, children, siblings, spouse etc. we use the Context Menu of the person in focus in any view: 'Individual' → 'Add parents|spouse|…'. This will automatically also create families if these are not existing yet.
