|
|
I'm using a Mac, running OSX 10.2.8
I'm just trying to learn how to run GenJ. I'd like to use the help files, but every time I press the help button I get the message:
Please install genj_help-x.y.zip
Can't find a file of that name. The help file I find is
genj_help_en-2.3.2.zip
Where am I supposed to install this so that the applet can find it, please?

Hi Dave
the released help-files are named genj_help_aa-x.y.zip where
aa = en(glish) - for english help
x = major version
y = minor version
so the file you have there genj_help_en-2.3.2.zip is exactly the right thing. You'd have to unzip it into the genj installation folder. You should see a ./help-directory show up in that folder afterwards.

I'm sure you're talking about the GenJ application, right? I assume you're starting GenJ by double-clicking on run.jar or using run.sh?
You might also want to consider downloading one of the newer builds we're automatically creating. They contain the features and changes that will be published officially with the next release some time this year. Nightlies are available here:
http://genj.sourceforge.net/download/unstable
Hope that helps
Cheers

I've done that - I still get the error message when I try to start help. Should I have put the file from the lib subdirectory in the Genj/lib directory?
Thanks for your swift response

Dave
the files in genj-help_en-2.3.2.zip have to be unzipped so please make sure you have these files in your genj installation folder:
./lib/jhbasic.jar
./help/en/frameset.html
Also please check ~/.genj/genj.log and post the content here. Maybe something's going wrong
Thanks

Just FYI for everyone since we're in the FAQ section - the next release won't have separate downloadables for getting help-files installed.
Instead the language specific files genj_xx-2.4.zip will contain help files if available (additionally to the language resource strings and almanach), cutting down on the number of downloadables to manage by the user.
Regards

Thanks for this thread Dave and NIls. Very helpful. I am using Mandriva LE2005 and to get the help files operational had to install the "help" folder in...
/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_10/bin
Maybe I have something else set up incorrectly and if so I would like to be told please but crude though this may seem to be, it all works OK.
Cheers, Philip. |

Hmm, that is a tad strange - the files should be fine under the genj directory. Let's see how 2.4 will fair on your system once available
Thanks

So strange that I couldn't resist reinstalling Java/GenJ - and now everything is running "normally" so will not need to wait for 2.4 but thanks for the reply NIls.
A most impressive package. Philip. |

I downloaded Genj-app- 2.4.4, but there are no help files in the folder, and when I click 'Help', I just get the message about installing genj_en-x.y.zip. Where can I get the help files, please? _________________ Michael Graubart |

Thanks, Zebooka. I downloaded a zip file called 'genj_en-2.4.4.zip'. When I unzipped it, it contained a 'Help' folder with lots of files in it. I tried putting it into the genj.app folder, but it didn't do anything when I clicked on 'Help' with the app. running. How do I install it so that it works, please? _________________ Michael Graubart |

Those help files should be placed under the genj directory, to get something like :
genj/help/en
As I do not know your Operating system, I can't give you more explanations, but that should do the trick Francois |

Michael
if you unzip genj_en-2.4.4.zip into the GenJ installation directory then it should work. The folders I see here after the install are
./contrib
./doc
./gedcom
./help
./lib
./report
run.bat
run.cmd
run.jar
run.sh
Make sure to unzip the archive with options to preserve the contained directory structure.
Cheers

Nils, I experimented some more in accordance with your advice, but with no success.
These are the contents of genj_app-2.4.4:
contrib
doc
gedcom
lib
report
run.bat
run.cmd
run.jar
run.sh
These are the contents of genj_en-2.4.4:
help
lib
contrib
First, I made a backup copy of genj_app-2.4.4. Then I copied the three items from genj_en-2.4.4 into genj_app-2.4.4, thus replacing two items already there. That resulted in genj not working any more. So I abandoned that, went to my backup copy and copied just 'Help' from genj_en-2.4.4 into genj_app-2.4.4. Now genj works again, but under the 'Help' > 'Contents' menu all I get is still the 'Install…' message.
Am I misunderstanding your instructions? _________________ Michael Graubart |

Problem solved! But rather strangely. I originally downloaded genj_app-2.4.4 from this link: 'March 08th 2008: GenealogyJ Version 2.4.4 is available for download.' That was when I could do nothing to make the Help work.
On a whim, I just went back to the site and this time used this link: 'Check out the screenshots or run the Applet to get a first impression of GenJ. New users can first learn more about GenJ in the manual or simply download a pre-built version of GenealogyJ and explore the views it offers to the user.' And now the Help folder is already included and the Help menu works.
Is it that these two links connect with two different versions of the Genj installation folder, or has something been updated in the last few days?
Anyhow, it all works now. Thanks for help. _________________ Michael Graubart |

Hi Michael
I'm glad it works - I think there was a link to an older version of GenJ that was fixed
Cheers
