Modifying an existing tree

Postby hershmab » Tue Apr 10, 2012 19:03:20

I have just started with GenealogyJ 3.0, having downloaded my wife's own family tree as Gedcom from Genes Reunited and also acquired a Gedcom tree from a newly-found remote relation. There are a few problems that I cannot find Help references to:

Two cousins married each other but the husband appears twice in the tree, once as the son of an existing family, once as a stranger (without any parents of his own) marrying in. How can I merge all the properties to form just one individual?

How can I merge the two separate Gedcoms to form one integrated tree?
One other problem that has made life even more difficult is that the installed Help file does not seem to match the context menus.

Hey there :)

Probably a late reply but you can use an alias for this. Select one of the duplicate records and say create an alias.
Then in the dialog box, choose the duplicate entry.

Another option, and what I would prefer to do is, after making sure that both duplicate entries are the same.
Delete the entry with no parents.
Re-create a individual but in the dialog box, instead of saying new instance... Select the duplicate person that has parents listed.

This way it will form a link and it might be displayed a bit weirdly... but should accomplish what your looking for.

GenJ doesn't support merging two GEDCOM files at the moment :)

Regarding merging:

It is a very difficult process computationally to do automatically. I for one am glad GenJ does not offer it as an option (yet).

What I do is open two instances of GenJ (run the executable twice). Open the Master file (i.e. the Target) in one instance and the source file in the other instance. Copy and paste between the two instances. This lets you check that the data is okay before importing it into your master file.

There is another manual way to merge two unrelated GEDCOM files, I'll post it in a new message in a moment.
