How to add multiple events (BIRT DATE PLAC)

Postby paulzag » Mon Jan 03, 2011 9:30:37

There are multiple conflicting sources for my great grandfather's PLACe of BIRTh. I assume I'll eventually also have multiple potential birth dates too.

My understanding of the GEDCOM spec is that conflicting information is dealt with by entering multiple tags. In this case I would have two PLAC tags

Code: Select all

1 BIRT
    2 DATE 1887
    2 SOUR @S29@
    2 PLAC Barbeski, Asia Minor, Turkey
        3 SOUR @S51@
    2 PLAC Xanthi, Greece
        3 SOUR @S15@
    2 _TODO Order these records and view this source
    2 _TODO cite birth evidence

If he had conflicting birth dates I'd add two BIRT events.

I can't add a second PLAC or a second BIRT event in GEDCOM mode via right-click Add Property > or Add Property...

I had to edit the file in a text editor. Once I edited it GenJ seems to cope okay - not sure what reports will break.

Am I misunderstanding the spec here? If not I understand adding a second BIRT record is counter-intuitive but maybe the dialogue box Add Property... should allow multiple tags to be added with a warning.

Hi paulzag

GEDCOM requires in this case two events:

GEDCOM 5.5.1 p. 21:

"! Conflicting event dates and places should be represented by placing them in separate event
structures with appropriate source citations rather than by placing them under the same enclosing
event."

see http://genj.sourceforge.net/wiki/en/manual/place_specs and

Thank you Peter,

The wiki has improved greatly with your help.

I'll create two events.

Now I have to work out how to add a second BIRTh event. GEDCOM nor Standard edit mode allows the creation of a second BIRTh event.

Should I file a bug or is it discussed elsewhere?

I think a warning dialog box with a "don't show this alert again" should pop up when trying to add a second event that is not normally duplicated.

Hi Paulzag

GEDCOM allows 2 BIRT events:

n @XREF:INDI@ INDI {1:1}
...
+1 <<INDIVIDUAL_EVENT_STRUCTURE>> {0:M} p.34

INDIVIDUAL_EVENT_STRUCTURE:=
n [ BIRT | CHR ] [Y|<NULL>] {1:1}

{0:M} means that any number of individual events is allowed.

In GenJ for such a seldom case you have to use GEDCOM mode: copy the birth event (CTRL+C), focus on any level 1 line and paste (CTRL+V) to it. Then drag and drop that BIRT line from level 2 to level 1 and in the proper sequence (most probable first).

But be sure that most programs will not handle that properly.
Thus, I would put the less probable case into a note.

Hi

yes, GenJ is a little 'too' helpful there not showing another BIRTh entry (it assumes folks will use one only).

You can also go to "Add Property...", Select "New Tag" and type out BIRT to add a second birth.

It's an edge case so I think we're ok with how that works right now

Cheers
Nils

Yes, the feature "Add Property...", Select "New Tag" is a better solution and rather powerful. I have added it to the Help Wiki:
